Centers of Attention: Montavilla

If you had to guess which Portland neighborhood was recently voted one of the Top Ten to visit in the country, you would probably guess something like Division, or the Alphabet district, or Alberta Street. Those are all great Portland ‘hoods with plenty of dining, shopping, and people-watching opportunities. However, as a resident of nearby Roseway I can tell you that one of the most underrated neighborhoods in Portland is Montavilla.

Occupying the area from Tabor to 205, and 84 to Division, Montavilla is a richly diverse section of Portland brimming with restaurants, shopping, and things to do. The residential tree-lined streets are speckled with charming craftsman homes. A favorite Portland movie theatre, the Academy, is smack-dab in the center of Montavilla and plays second run movies, cult classics and indie favorites. Babysitting is available for select screenings, or bring the kids to a matinee! They offer a Kid’s Pack with popcorn, fruit snacks, and a beverage for only $5.50.

Academy Theatre

Surrounding the Academy Theatre is the heart of the Montavilla neighborhood.  Stark Street is the geographical center of the neighborhood and connects our volcanic Mt. Tabor on the western edge with the outstanding Montavilla pool and community center to the east.

Stark is also home to great food and drink options for any time of day. Don’t miss brunch at Redwood or sushi at Miyamoto. Stop for ice cream at Cold As Ice creamery, or grab a nightcap at Vintage Cocktail Lounge while making good use of the crayons and adult coloring pages.

The Observatory and sister bar, Over and Out (same menu, plus pinball and pool!), have a solid veggie burger and plenty of tantalizing omni-options to nosh on while you sip one of their imaginative specialty cocktails. But don’t peg Montavilla as some swanky hipster paradise, there are some of the city’s best dives here as well. From Thatcher’s pool tables and patio, to the bar games and bottle shop at Beer Bunker there is truly something for everyone in Montavilla.

Montavilla Community Pool

But if you’re hankering for Asian cuisine, skip Stark and head south on 82nd Avenue. The Fubonn Shopping Center, HA & VL, Van Hanh Vegetarian, Tanuki, and many many more restaurants offer more world-class Asian cuisine than you could ever sample!

Market Trends

The median sale price in Montavilla is up 5% over the past year, and currently sits at $366,200.

Price per sq. ft is equal to the Portland average, coming in at $296 per square foot.  Inventory is low which keeps prices high but if you are lucky enough to snag one of these homes you won’t regret it!  With appreciation at 4% year-over-year, purchasing a Montavilla home is proving to be a solid investment.
